Pierre: Souvenirs de Jeunesse by Anatole France, published by Allyn and Bacon, Boston, 1926. Condition is good, with minimal overall wear and the book presenting very well throughout. Please see photos for full details.

Condition notes: there are pencil markings on the pages and page edges throughout, consistent with a copy that was used for close study and language learning, as would be expected from a French language educational edition of this kind. The book is otherwise in excellent condition with very minimal wear.

Anatole France, born Jacques-Anatole-François Thibault, was the son of a Paris bookseller and went on to become one of the most celebrated French writers of his era, serving as assistant librarian at the French Senate before turning fully to literature. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1921, cited for his brilliant literary achievements characterized by a nobility of style, a profound human sympathy, grace, and a true Gallic temperament. At the time of his Nobel award, the Swedish Academy praised both the substance and style of France's writings as worthy of his great predecessors including François Rabelais and Voltaire, calling him the last of the great classicists and the most authoritative contemporary representative of French civilization.

Pierre: Souvenirs de Jeunesse belongs to a series of autobiographical works France dedicated to his childhood years, alongside companion volumes including Le Livre de mon ami, Le Petit Pierre, and La Vie en fleur. The 1926 Allyn and Bacon edition was prepared as a French language educational text for American students, making the pencil annotations in this copy entirely in keeping with its original purpose as a classroom or study copy.

Allyn and Bacon was founded in Boston in 1868 and grew into one of the most respected educational publishers in the United States, eventually becoming part of Pearson Education, the world's largest education publishing company. The company initially specialized in high school textbooks, and in 1895 its Classical Series overtook all other competition in Latin education in the United States, making their selection of a Nobel Prize-winning French author for their modern language curriculum entirely consistent with their reputation for rigorous, prestigious educational content.

A wonderful addition for collectors of Nobel Prize winning literature, French language educational texts, early 20th century Americana, or Anatole France editions specifically. The combination of a celebrated Nobel laureate and a respected Boston educational imprint makes this a genuinely appealing piece for the right collector.
