Originally published as a serialized story in 1919 and credited with creating the swashbuckling and romantic hero genre of literature and film, The Mark of Zorro follows Don Diego de la Vega, a wealthy aristocrat who secretly becomes the masked, sword-wielding defender of the oppressed in old California, leaving his trademark Z on his enemies. The success of the 1920 Douglas Fairbanks silent film adaptation, which introduced the now iconic Zorro costume, convinced McCulley to write Zorro stories for four more decades, and the character has since inspired over forty films, multiple television series, and countless adaptations worldwide. Many of McCulley’s masked hero characters, including The Green Ghost, The Thunderbolt, and The Crimson Clown, were direct inspirations for the masked heroes that have appeared in popular culture from his time to the present day, making him a foundational figure in the history of the superhero genre long before comic books existed.
The Easton Press fine leather binding in near mint condition presents this cornerstone of popular fiction in a beautifully produced collectors edition worthy of the legend it contains.
