The Pilot: A Tale of the Sea by James Fenimore Cooper, published by Easton Press, 1968. Condition is fine, factory sealed and never opened. No damage whatsoever.

James Fenimore Cooper was the first major American novelist, best known for the Leatherstocking Tales including The Last of the Mohicans, and with The Pilot he set the style for an entirely new genre of sea fiction. For the first time a genuine sea novel had been written, and in spite of some obvious defects, The Pilot remains to this day one of the best novels of its class, directly inspiring a tradition of maritime literature that runs through Herman Melville’s Moby Dick and beyond. Cooper served in the United States Navy before turning to writing, giving his sea tales an authenticity that set them apart from anything that had come before.

This 1968 Easton Press edition is among the earliest productions of a publisher that would go on to become the premier name in fine leather bound collectors editions in the United States, making it a particularly collectible piece from the press’s early years.

A wonderful addition for collectors of classic American literature, maritime fiction, 19th century adventure novels, or early Easton Press editions.
